A Prestigious History - The distinctive Chesterfield and the 'iconic' Chesterfield Couture

Of all the makes of classical English furniture, few names resonate with the same historical authenticity as the Chesterfield sofa. Amongst the plethora of truly outstanding, sophisticated and world-renowned antiques crafted by proud local tradesmen that comprise the English furniture heritage, the Chesterfield occupies a unique place within the furniture-lover's consciousness.

So where did the real story of this much respected brand begin? This is, perhaps surprisingly, an area of much conjecture within the furniture world. There is no official record of where the name "Chesterfield" derives from, although there are a number of ideas surrounding the possible origins. Some believe that the name may have come from an original commission by the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope. The story goes that the Earl was saddened by the decline of the youth of his day. Young gentleman and ladies were spending too much time hunting, dancing and enjoying ‘frivolous’ activities to properly attend to their studies and ‘matters’ of an educational kind. He therefore commissioned a couch that whilst offering comfort and elegance would also lend itself to more serious matters and would help the user to sit well, sit comfortably and concentrate on academical matters in hand. And that is how the most popular conception story goes,…and it has been embellished many times by some manufacturers. (Some, even claim to be the forbears of this 'uncertain' story and claim to remember back to 1780?). However, no one really knows where this distinctive sofa originated, it is simply the case that it has evolved to become a truly iconic piece of hand made furniture.
